Following Brexit and to ensure the Brexit got done, many EU laws were automatically transferred into British law.
However, the newly elected Prime Minister of the UK, Liz Truss, vowed during the recent Tory election campaign to light a bonfire of EU red tape, in order to remove the remaining EU laws on the British statute book.
The move will be designed to entice investors and boost economic growth. The promise to remove the 1500+ laws was given a deadline of the end of 2023.
Truss said “EU regulations hinder our businesses and this has to change”.
Critics have pointed out, apart from the deadline being difficult to meet, that not all EU laws are necessarily bad and that moving away from these laws will potentially lead to an increase in trade barriers as checks of goods bound for the EU could increase.
