Whilst Boris Johnson acts as a caretaker Prime Minister in the UK, the government continues to push ahead with a proposal to change the Northern Ireland Protocol introduced as part of the Brexit agreement between the UK and the EU.
The Bill introduced by Liz Truss in June 2022 will propose the introduction of a green and red lane for goods crossing the Irish Sea from Great Britain.
The protocol is unpopular with unionists and loyalist and has created tensions in Northern Ireland and potentially threatening the Good Friday Agreement.
The proposal will mean that businesses importing goods into Northern Ireland from Great Britain will not have to make full customs declarations although they will be required to sign up to a Trusted Trader scheme.
Despite Rishi Sunak reassuring members of the European Research Group (ERG), the group is widely expected to back Liz Truss in the upcoming Conservative leadership contest, which will see a new Prime Minister installed into No 10 on the 5th September 2022.
