Mandatory PCS Registration for EU Battery Suppliers Starts on 18 August

As part of the EU’s drive to strengthen its circular‑economy ambitions, all firms selling batteries within the European Union must enrol in a certified Producer Compliance Scheme (PCS) by 18 August. This requirement, set out in the recently overhauled Batteries Regulation, aims to ensure full traceability and proper end‑of‑life processing.

Under the new rules, producers are obliged to submit comprehensive information on the quantities and types of batteries placed on the market, along with detailed plans for collection, treatment, and recycling. Member States will use these data to verify adherence to ambitious recovery rates—50% for portable batteries and up to 70% for vehicle applications.

Registration portals are now accessible via national environmental agency websites, and dedicated support services, including online workshops, have been rolled out to assist businesses. Manufacturers should be registered by the 18th August to ensure they can continue to sell batteries into the EU. Without registration manufacturers may subject to fines.

While smaller manufacturers have raised questions about the administrative burden, industry representatives welcome the greater regulatory clarity. They argue that harmonized requirements will ultimately streamline operations and foster a more level playing field.
