The UK government has set out its next steps on machinery safety regulation following a recent industry consultation, pointing toward closer alignment with upcoming EU rules.
The call for evidence, launched in July 2025, asked businesses and stakeholders whether the UK should continue recognising EU machinery requirements-such as CE marking-and whether it should adopt a similar framework to the EU’s new Machinery Regulation, due to apply from January 2027.
Feedback from across industry was clear. Most respondents supported maintaining recognition of EU standards and introducing similar measures in Great Britain. Businesses highlighted the practical benefits of alignment, including reduced duplication, lower compliance costs, and easier access to both EU and Northern Ireland markets.
For many, especially smaller companies, divergence was seen as a risk-potentially increasing costs, limiting product availability, and adding complexity to already demanding compliance processes.
The consultation also revealed strong backing for modernisation. Stakeholders welcomed moves toward digital documentation and tools such as QR codes and digital product passports, which could simplify how compliance information is managed and shared.
However, not all proposals received unanimous support. Opinions were divided on expanding mandatory third-party conformity assessments, with some viewing them as necessary for higher-risk machinery, while others warned of increased costs and limited assessment capacity.
Looking ahead, the government has confirmed it will retain CE recognition for machinery in Great Britain and update existing legislation to reflect many elements of the EU framework. While not a direct copy, the approach will remain closely aligned to support trade and ensure safety standards keep pace with technological change.
