Whilst Liz Truss was Prime Minister in the UK, a new bill was introduced to the UK parliament by Jacob Rees-Mogg, to automatically scrap up to 4000 EU laws on the 31st December 2023.
The laws to be scrapped, were laws which had been introduced to the UK as part of it’s membership of the EU, but having left the EU in a process known as Brexit, the UK is now free to scrap all EU laws and make it’s own.
However, a strong opposition began to emerge regarding the bill, including from businesses, environmental groups, unions and the European Union itself. The objections centred around risks to business sustainability, employee rights and environmental protections.
In the light of the oppostition, the UK government has proposed a watering down of the legislation, which will see just 800 laws removed on the 31st December 2023.
The laws still in line to be scrapped include laws on animal testing, compensation rights for delayed flights, equal pay rights for men and women and pension rights.
